The water softener is a system that removes calcium and magnesium ions from the water by replacing it with sodium ions, the process called ion exchange method and the media used for this purpose called ion exchange resin. And in the absence of calcium and magnesium, the water becomes soft.
When water is referred as ‘hard’, this simply means that it contains more minerals and when we talk about the minerals of hard water, it means calcium and magnesium. The degree of hardness of water is directly proportional to the quantity of calcium and magnesium ions present in the water, means as the calcium and magnesium increases the hardness of water increases, and vice versa. Calcium and magnesium are positively charged ions and in the presence of these ions other positively charged ions does not dissolve in the water, that’s why soap does not dissolve in hard water easily.
